Creating an energetic couple's retreat is all about reconnecting with each other and finding joy in life's simple pleasures. For our first anniversary on January 11, 2024, I surprised MK with a getaway to Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga, nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, California. We focused on gratitude for each other, the sun in January, the experience of relaxation, and nothing to do except be present with one another.
Our first stop was the Day Spa, where we enjoyed a couple’s signature massage. This service gave us access to the Buddha Pond, a private space offered only to spa guests. In our cozy robes, with tea in hand, we snuggled in a love seat amongst the private gardens and took the space in, moment by moment. My attention was captured by the sunlight filtering through the towering palm trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground and creating a dance of light and shade. The sky above is a clear, unblemished shade of blue, offering a vivid backdrop to the garden's lush greenery.
Adding to the sensory experience is the steam from the nearby hot springs, enveloping the garden in a warm, ethereal mist. This steam carried the subtle, earthy scent of the mineral-rich waters, grounding us in the moment and enhancing the feeling of being connected to nature.
After enjoying a rejuvenating massage at the spa, the Buddha Pond becomes a sanctuary where you can continue to unwind. The presence of the Buddha statue itself instills a sense of calm and mindfulness, inviting you to sit and meditate or soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The garden is designed to be a perfect, private, and secluded space where time slows down, allowing you to savor the quiet and therapeutic benefits of the surrounding nature.
As guests at the spa, we purchased a day pass to the mineral pools. My only prior encounter with a natural hot spring was amidst the untouched beauty of Costa Rica's rugged pools; thus, the revelation that Indian Springs' focal point was an Olympic-sized pool was a surprise. Entering the resort, we were greeted by the sight of steamy water erupting from the earth, leading me to anticipate a journey into those natural wonders. Yet, it was explained that the pool draws warmth from the geothermal water, a gift from the property's hot springs. This phenomenon occurs as the heat from the Earth's core gently warms the groundwater, propelling it to the surface as either hot water or steam, filled with minerals it acquires from the layers it passes through. This accounts for the relaxation felt when submerged in mineral-infused waters. Our bodies soaked in the therapeutic advantages and found comfort in 92 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit waters — a perfect equilibrium. Not too hot or too cold.
My skin was radiant after floating in the mineral water. Minerals such as sulfur, silica, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate work together to detoxify, hydrate, and promote skin elasticity, leading to rejuvenated, tighter, and shiny skin. The warmth of the water enhances the absorption of these minerals, further improving skin health and appearance by promoting cellular regeneration, healing, and improving hydration.
The grounds of Indian Springs are beautifully landscaped, with paths that meander through native plants and offer serene spots for relaxation and contemplation. Accommodation at the resort ranges from historic cottages and bungalows to modern rooms, providing options for various tastes and preferences.
On the next visit, we will stay overnight, giving us access to the pools until midnight and spending the day alternating between the mineral pool and napping in our room. We will watch the sunset and even star gaze from the pool. We may even try a mud bath created from volcanic ash and mineral water once I gather the courage to overcome my fear of sitting in mud. After all, I could picture this experience as a warm embrace or hug from Mother Earth.
After soaking in the pool and enjoying a light lunch by the fire at the Chase Lounge (located in the pavilion between the mineral pool and the adult pool), we showered at the spa and got ready for dinner at Sam's Social Club. The food was spectacular, with a seasonally influenced menu and dishes prepared from fresh and local ingredients. Outdoor dining surrounded by nature and romantic lighting created the perfect ambiance.
Indian Springs reminded us that sometimes, the best way to recharge and reconnect is to step away from the hustle, bustle of daily life, and immerse ourselves in nature's embrace. During the week, it felt like we had the entire resort to ourselves.
